Chthon. This is a book I read back in the late 70's, maybe early 80's. I was not aware until this latest reading that it was Mr. Anthony's first book and that it took him about seven years to write.

Now, what I remembered about this book did not hold up to my understanding of this book in the latest reading. We are talking about night and day differences and the number one reason why I am rereading old books from my teens and young adult days. It is true that Pier Anthony was one of my favorite authors at the time, with the sexual nature of his later books much more on display, something that might appeal to most teens/young adult in the time before easy internet access.

One reviewer indicate that he is traumatized for life. I can understand that. The book is brutal. Mr. Anthony uses a dash of Oedipus, in describing the part of the forbidden nature of the minionette's mythology. His main character Aton has a long haul to escape from a brilliantly describe underworld prison. The story goes back and forth in Aton's lifetime, Aton in prison, Aton as a little boy, Aton's time as a spaceman, the great trek (escape) and facing up to his nature. Love and hate, using hate to love and using love to hate.

As a teen/young adult reader, I learned to speed read through three or four paperbacks a week. It is obvious to me, that I missed the main plot of the book and the multiple layers of story by design that took Mr. Anthony seven years to complete. I am glad to have reread it. 5 stars back then (very little) erotica, 5 stars now for very different reasons, plot, structure and story. Next is Phthor.

Very creative writing example from Piers. His fans will truely enjoy it.
I read this book when it was first published. It was a terrific introduction to Piers Anthony's writing. He has never disappointed me.
Out-of-the-box plot and storyline
This book is from early in Piers Anthony's writing career, and is a reminder to those who only read the Xanth novels that Piers has a can have a darker, more complex, unfrivolous side to his storytelling when he wishes. The story was quite absorbing - and required a bit of work to keep the timelines straight, as the story is revealed to you in a non-sequential way (slightly reminiscent of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse 5, in this respect only). Overall very entertaining.
This is a mind-bender of a book, but worth the read. I'd say it started out as a 3-star, but earned the 4-star rating on the strength of an engrossing second half. There's some very strong sci-fi elements (especially in the underground sections), so if you go for that, you'll like it. There were multiple environments and creatures that were unique from anything I've read elsewhere, which was fun. Not a light read, but engaging.
I bought the Xlibris hardcover from an early print run. The binding was excellent. The story is top notch science fiction, though there's a couple of rough scenes (a rape, and the Oedipus complex element, with a science-fiction twist). A new author's note explains a couple of the more complex parts of the book.

The print I read was riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes. Clearly, the copyeditor did a quick sprint through the book, not paying close attention. I contacted the author, and he indicates that these should now be fixed once a new print occurs.
As a longtime fan of Mr. Anthony, this early novel was one I had never found in hardcover or paperback. Seeing it as a release, I purchased it and am glad I did. It was refreshing to return to a writer that had previously delighted me with his novels. “Chthon” is now in that group.

The main character of Aton reminded me of Mr. Anthony’s Var the Stick in “Battle Circle,” a man trapped into doing what he believed was right even though it wasn’t the option he wanted or that he felt would make him happy. This moral quandary is missing from many stories I come across nowadays, and the combination of a fantastic plot and deep characterization is a talent a writer should strive to create. When this happens, an entertaining and engrossing book is the result, emphasized by nominations for both Hugo and Nebula Awards.

The author jumps back and forth through different time periods in Aton’s life, presenting questions that are answered later. The technique is effective, and kept me turning the pages until the end. There are poetic interludes (Prolog, Interlog, and Epilog) which some readers may be tempted to skim, but they add meaning to the novel and deserve careful reading. The Author’s Note after the story is part autobiography, part explanation of some of the nuanced sections of the book. There were some aspects I caught, others I missed, and it is enlightening to read this before placing the book on the shelf or removing it from the carousel.

Overall, a great book from an accomplished author. Five stars.
