Four teenage boys, coming of age and dreaming of their future, even as that future seemed to be slipping through their young fingers. It wasn’t their fault they were born into a town, into a way of life, that was dying. They did what they were supposed to do followed the rules, studied hard, played hard. But for them, unlike their fathers and grandfathers, there was no promise of a fat salary at the mill, no promise of a house and a yard and a middle class life. Not in Hopeton Mills, Pennsylvania, anyway. Not when the fabric of so much of America was fraying in the late 1970’s and 80’s. They had but one option, just like kids in factory towns and farm towns coast to coast—getting the hell out. As their hero from an equally bleak Jersey shore town put it in the title to his iconic anthem, these four sons of Hopeton Mills were born to run.
Summer of Hope, Summer of Dreams is a story of the follies and dreams of youth, of enduring loyalty and friendship, of the hope and faith of adulthood, and of the bonds forged from songs that inspired a generation.
Summer of Hope Summer of Dreams edition by Steven Recht Literature Fiction eBooks
Coming of age in the 70's is the theme of this debut novel, and it is done well. Four boys and their life-long bond, their antics, and their love of Bruce Springsteen and all he represents is very readable. The locale is small town western Pennsylvania, but it really could be anyplace where a town depends on a dying company or industry; take your pick, north, south, east or west USA. The boys, "Cunny" Cunningham (can't help thinking Happy Days), Moe, Pops and Cheech have had various levels of success after high school - Cunny running for Congress, Moe a high powered broker, Pops a business mogul, and Cheech with a insurance agency bolstered by Cunny's loyalty. Cheech is the butt of their jokes, and pranks as a young man, and that tone continues into their adult lives. I'm not sure he would have stood for that all of his life. That may be a weakness of the tale. But all changes when Cunny's boy is injured. The story goes from current to past days, mostly past, with Springsteen tying the two together. The final tying seems a bit contrived, a little too perfect, and for that I reduced my score by one star. It does, however, offer a fun and sometimes poignant glimpse into these boys/men's lives that makes for a very good read.Product details

Summer of Hope Summer of Dreams edition by Steven Recht Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a delightful read, especially for those of us growing up in the 70s around the steel mills!
The author has a special style of making the characters come to life.
I enjoyed Steven Recht's first book, Sandy Cove, and like it as well.
Plot, story, writing style, all makes this a lovely, comfortable summer read. Steven Recht has a beautiful grasp of language, expression, and description. When you read his stories, you are there and live them. This is a fabulous escape into those years gone by.
This is a thoroughly engaging novel about life in a small town in the late 70s. The characters, particularly the main characters, are well-drawn, and encourage you to want to learn more about their story. There are unexpected twists and turns, both humorous and unnerving. I never wanted to put the book down....
This was an enjoyable read. The characters were real and you were able to relate to them. Somewhat reminiscent of one's own childhood. The plot was interesting and kept your interest. This made it a quick read. I'm definitely going to start the author's first book, Sandy Cove.
Once again, Steven has written a thoroughly engaging story. A terrific, nostalgic, "then and now" look at life growing up in a slowly dying steel town. Anyone from a small town will definitely recognize and appreciate the characters. I'm not a huge Springsteen fan, but I did get a kick out of the clever references throughout the book. I highly recommend this book and can't wait for his next one!
Loved this. It's every bit as good, if not better, than Mr. Recht's previous book, Sandy Cove. This time, instead of a beach town, you're transported to a struggling Pennsylvania steel town. You meet characters right out of your own childhood. And you re-live both the joy and the angst of youth, of not knowing what lies beyond the horizon. This is the story of growing up in a dying town and yearning for something better - it's like a Springsteen song-turned-novel. And like the very best Springsteen songs, it paints a gritty, vivid picture. It tugs at your heart. But more than anything, it gives you hope.
Very enjoyable read. Selected this book for our book club to read. Those that read it, enjoyed it. The characters really drew you in and there were some good twists and turns throughout the book. A very relatable story for anyone from a small town.
