Sherry and Narcotics was a bullet train that drove Gardner's narration from its pages straight into my heart. I read a third of it late last night and this morning I stayed in bed until I was done. Didn't budge; what a treat. This is neither a timid nor a sentimental author. Nina Marie Gardner goes straight for the jugular from page one and doesn't let go until the very end. The tension continuously ebbs and surges keeping the reader wishing and pulling for the main character, always unsure of her final fate.I enjoyed the intermixing of the narrator's voice with text messages and emails not only as an ingenious mean to propel the story along; but one that belongs to our age. This is masterfully done, giving the book an overall harmony in movement with changes in rhythm that keep the reader in constant suspense. Not a dull moment here.
To say that I was undaunted by the main character's plight would be a big fat lie. I fell for Mary and her struggles from the very first page. My heart went out for her and I admit that it did ache upon reading the ending of her first night back on the bottle.
A very easy read, albeit an exhilarating one. A deceivingly simple voice that is poetically rich without being pretentious. The descriptions of the scenery is rich in detail, be it a pub, the city of Manchester, the lobby of a hotel or a posh restaurant, the reader is given the full spectrum of sensory experiences that only a very conscious and honest writer can render vivid and fully alive. It was precisely through the strength of her descriptions that the author managed to keep me in constant touch with our heroine Mary and the crescendo of trials that she underwent. From very early in the book, Mary stopped being a fictitious character and quickly became a good friend. I found the ending soothing and subtle leaving me calm and relaxed. It wasn't overplayed, nor spelled out, but very satisfying.
I strongly recommend this book and I am positive that it's one of those that I'll get back to.

Sherry and Narcotics NinaMarie Gardner 9780982792827 Books Reviews
Days after reading this, I still have mixed feelings about this book. I have a hard time deciding on my rating and if I "Liked" it or not. I did like it, but I did have a hard time reading it.
Many different reviews described this perfectly by saying that it is like seeing that a train wreck is about to occur, but curiosity keeps you watching just to see how bad the crash actually is. I couldn't help but find myself wanting to scream at the pages at Mary to get real and grow up and open your eyes!
If I understand correctly, this is a true story of the author's earlier life experiences. I was little taken aback by the title though. Even though Mary did drink quite frequently, and I think allowed Jake to influence her drinking and activities more than she would have would he not have came into her life. But anyway, she did drink frequently, however, I think the story only mention Sherry a time or two and referenced Narcotics a time or two as well, so I wasn't sure why there was such an influence for the title.
I was taken aback at the ending of the story. I felt like it was left a little too open. I get the premise of the ending showing that she felt like she could move on with the way her life turned out and that everything would turn out okay in the end. I just wish that maybe even a page or so more, so we could have learned where Mary decided to go from there, beyond knowing that she would move on!
I did have difficult in the actual reading of this story, with some typo's (even though the ones in the emails kept the story realistic. My biggest qualm about the book was that there were no page numbers, however, my rating absolutely was not affected by the fact that there were no page numbers.
A 21st-century addict's version of "Oh the Places You'll Go." Loved it. I read it in one night! Highly recommend.
A riveting, compelling and honest account of a harrowing journey into love and addiction that made my heart race in anxiety and my head question how in the world this was going to end. I wish there were more and hope we get another....
This gorgeous, honest book is a must read. Compelling and often heartbreaking, it's also tempered by moments of real hilarity. I finished it in 2 days, and it still stays with me. I know I'll be thinking about Mary for a long time, and I can only hope the author writes a prequel or sequel so I can find out more about her life!
Have reviewed this on goodreads.com so see that but this is such an 80's novel with the protagonist for far too many pages, unaware of her fate. Everyone knows within the first ten pages that the "protagonist" is a crash victim for a relationship that is not destined to succeed. So obvious, protagonist lacks credibility (hate seeing someone who is supposed to be a somewhat survivor of the feminist world to be so helpless!). Read for yourselves if you can be bothered. Skim read at best. Put down at page 50 as a non finisher. OUt of 600 plus books I have read in recent years, this would make number 4. Flick read to see how many pages it took for protagonist to get the message. Sick of these "clever" representative novels of the women in our society. Shame, shame, shame. Not representative at all, thank goodness.
A must read Book! for people that have loved ones that are struggling with addiction. what goes through the minds of those individuals and to what extent they will go just for 1 more high and 1 more drink.
I just finished Nina-Marie Gardner's novel Sherry and Narcotics and have to say it's a wonderful, sad, dark story of love, desperation and alcoholic drinking. It's cleanly written, stripped of pretense, and I found myself alternating rooting for Mary, the protagonist, and growing angry with her for not seeing through Jake's emotional games. But that's exactly what Nina-Marie Gardner, I believe, is after the portrait of a woman who wants desperately to love and be loved, and whose vision of such is warped by one bottle of wine too many. The ending is shockingly powerful. This is a beautifully honest story well told. Highly recommended.
